Very rare set sterling silver tools made for the Patrons of Husbandry (commonly referred to as the National Grange) fraternal organization. They were made by the Syracuse, NY jeweler Seymour & Son who worked from 1846 until the turn of the century. This set likely dates to around 1870-1880.

These is an incredibly rare set, and even rare, it has the original box which lists Seymour as working with the Patrons of Husbandry.

They are hand cut thin sheet (flat) sterling silver miniature tools. One side on each is engraved. The largest piece, the plow, has the Seymour & Son hallmark. The other pieces are unmarked but are guaranteed to be sterling silver.

Seymour is recorded as making the Patron of Husbandry's “jewels” in 1869 just one year after the establishment of the first Grange chapter which was in Western NY not far from where Seymour worked. It’s likely that this set is from that founding period and possibly that first Grange, making it a rare and important piece of American secret society history.

I have never seen another listed for sale and this very well could have been the only set made.

Even rarer, the pieces come with the original paper box!

Condition

The silver shows signs of tarnishing and scratches from storage/handling. The box is in very rough shape with tears, water stains, etc.
