As I am retiring from label collecting after 60 years of fun. I enjoyed collecting labels all these years, and now it is time to share my hobby with others. I have focused collecting salmon labels for many years.
This FORT SUTTER salmon label is from the Robert McDowell Company, of Sacramento. California. The company has a history of being a wholesale grocer:
- Early 1900s: The company was active as "wholesale grocers" during this period, with historical records and receipts dating back to at least 1910 and 1912.
- Expansion: By the mid-1930s, the company was a established regional distributor with a large fleet of delivery trucks.
- Continued Operation: Court records and historical news indicate the business was still operating as a "produce warehouse" as late as January 1960.
The printed date on the back of the label, is the date of the label trademark. Each printing company would hold a trademark label in their files, as proof the brand belongs to the company. This identification on this label, makes it "the official example" that the brand belongs to the company. Examples like this are rare to find, and worth keeping.
These type of labels were referred to as "private labels", where stores & food distributors had a direct manufacturing agreement with the salmon cannery, allowing retailers to bypass wholesalers and gain more control over quality & cost, leading to higher private margins. These type of private labels can be quite entertaining and fun to look at.
