LM317 Technical Description:
The output voltage range of the LM317 is 1.25V to 27V.
It is extremely easy to use, requiring only two external resistors to set the output voltage.
In addition, its line regulation and load regulation are better than those of standard fixed voltage regulators.
The LM317 integrates multiple protection circuits such as overload protection and safe area protection.
The LM317 does not require an external capacitor, unless the connection between the input filter capacitor
and the LM317 input terminal exceeds 6 inches (approx. 15 cm).
The use of an output capacitor can improve the transient response.
A filter capacitor connected to the adjustment terminal can achieve a much higher ripple rejection ratio than standard three-terminal regulators.
The LM317 has a wide range of special applications.
For example, floating the adjustment terminal to a higher voltage allows voltage regulation up to hundreds of volts, provided that the input-output voltage difference does not exceed the limit of the LM317.
Short-circuiting of the output terminal must certainly be avoided.
The adjustment terminal can also be connected to a programmable voltage to realize programmable power supply output.
The input voltage must be at least 2V higher than the output voltage; otherwise, voltage regulation cannot be achieved.
The maximum input voltage shall not exceed 40V, and the output current shall not exceed 1A.
For example, with an input voltage of 12V, the maximum output voltage is approximately 10V.
Since the LM317 adopts internal linear voltage regulation, its power consumption is relatively high.
When the input-output voltage difference is large and the output current is also high, care should be taken to prevent excessive power consumption of the LM317.
Generally, the power consumption shall not exceed 20W even with a heat sink installed.
Therefore, it is recommended to use stepped voltage regulation when a large voltage difference exists.
