HO Scale AHM V&TRR Genoa Steam Locomotive & Tender Set 4-4-0 Tested in Box / Runs!
Several years ago, my father passed and I received what remained of his train collection which consisted of a few engines, some passenger and freight cars, and lots of track. However, everything had been stored away decades ago and was in poor condition so I had to learn how to repair and restore them. In time, I managed to get one of the locomotives, a Virginia & Truckee Genoa 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive & Tender set, restored and running again and I discovered an interest in restoring other locomotives of the 4-4-0 configuration. From my searches, I found that many damaged and inoperable locomotives were able to be found and with parts and some effort, could be restored, so I turned that into my hobby: model train restorations.
The train you're looking at is my favorite, the Virginia & Truckee Genoa 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive & Tender Set. It comes in a AHM box with the appropriate markings on the side denoting that it is for a 4-4-0 "Genoa" 5067-B V&T. Unfortunately, while the box is in excellent shape, the clear, thin plastic window which allows you to see the locomotive inside was damaged and had to be removed, so a new plastic window was created.
Interestingly enough, while the Genoa is considered one of the most well-known of the 4-4-0 configurations, it has many variations to it's design, from the use of metal or plastic for the dome and air brake pieces, to changes to the smoke stack and pilot. Even the size of the badges between the two main wheels can change between variants.
Here's what you're getting:
- Original Rivarossi Manufacturer's Registration Record sheet: includes information maintenance for the model.
- Original Rivarossi markings on the locomotive beneath the pilot and underneath the tender chasis.
- When this model was received, it was in fair condition but still required a thorough cleaning to improve the overall response on the track. All metal surfaces have been buffed to restore their original shine and remove any corrosion, dirt or tarnish.
- The main gear was lubricated to improve movement.
- All screws were checked and tightened.
- A split was found in the center of the pilot (cowcatcher) requiring application of sealant to keep the pieces together.
- Drive shaft is present.
- Coupler was missing from the rear of the tender car. Hook and horn coupler was attached.
- Rear steps on back of the tender car were broken off.
- Motor function of the locomotive was tested to ensure response (see video for details). Smooth response to start, slow down, stop and reverse.
NOTE: Please understand this is a vintage model railroad locomotive and has been restored to function as near to what it did when it was first released. However, there is no guarantee how long it will last. With moderate usage, maintenance and care, it should continue to work for a reasonable amount of time.
