It has been tested and it does work with batteries. I don't recall if I held them in or if they stayed in. I researched this and it seems like the feng shui is sold without the battery cover. I figure that if it's just sitting there and you want it to work with the batteries, simply put a piece of tape over the batteries if necessary.
