The NEC PC-80S31 is an advanced dual 5.25" floppy-disk drive system designed for the vintage NEC PC-8001 microcomputer. Serving as a refined successor to the earlier PC-8031 unit, it stands out because it incorporates its own onboard processor and controller. This internal intelligence allows the PC-80S31 to handle all disk-related functions independently, freeing the main computer to focus on higher-level tasks. As a result, it became an essential upgrade for users who wanted to expand the PC-8001’s capabilities beyond the limitations of cassette-based storage.
I did not remove the top disk drive in order to find out the model of the bottom drive. The other PC-80S31 drive that I have contain TEAC FD-55BV.
Part of the PC-8000 Series:
Created as an external storage solution for the NEC PC-8001—one of Japan’s most influential late-1970s and early-1980s home computers.
Self-Contained Processing:
Unlike basic floppy drives, the PC-80S31 (like the PC-8031 before it) includes its own Z80-compatible CPU (the μPD780C-1), along with dedicated ROM and RAM. This architecture offloads disk I/O tasks from the PC-8001, improving overall performance.
Specialized Interface:
It connects to the PC-8001 through a dedicated interface card, such as the PC-8033, enabling features like Disk BASIC and full CP/M compatibility.
Refined Evolution:
As an enhanced iteration of the PC-8031, the PC-80S31 offers more reliable and flexible disk handling within the modular PC-8001 ecosystem.
By giving the PC-8001 true mass-storage capability, the PC-80S31 dramatically reduced loading times and made saving and managing files far more efficient. This upgrade was crucial for running sophisticated software—including CP/M applications—that simply wasn’t practical with cassette tapes alone.
This item is sold as is with no warranty and no returns. If you experience an issue, please contact me before leaving negative feedback. Communication through email is the best way to resolve concerns, and I always do my best to work with my customers.
I am a high school teacher, and my shipping schedule is limited. I can ship on Mondays (limited), and every Tuesday and Thursday. I do not ship on weekends. I am busy testing and posting computers for sale, and I also reserve time for my family. For this reason, I set a “3 days to ship” handling time. Thank you for your understanding.
For international orders, I only use eBay’s Global Shipping Service—no exceptions.
I will ship to Hawaii, Alaska, PO Boxes, and Puerto Rico, even though these locations are system-blocked, but the buyer must pay the exact calculated shipping costs. Please message me before purchasing if you live in one of these areas.
eBay policies require me to list all my auctions with a “no return” policy to protect against returns based on buyer’s remorse. Buyers can use an item for days or weeks and still request a return, and sellers are then responsible for the original and return shipping costs. Even with a “no return” listing, buyers may still return an item if it is not as described or was damaged in shipping. I do not need an eBay policy to do the right thing—I will always accept a return if the item was misrepresented or damaged in transit.
Please keep in mind that I primarily sell vintage computers and accessories. Even if a the shipping box shows no exterior damage, internal components may still be affected by rough handling during shipping. I will work with all customers to resolve any issues fairly. Recently, I have had returns where buyers did not verify their purchase with a parent, spouse, or anyone else before buying, and eBay required me to take the item back. This kind of return is not fair to small sellers. We are not large retailers like Walmart or Costco who can absorb such financial losses.
Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for your business. I truly appreciate your support.
