This is a professional grade ball bearing baren. This particular model is a 5½" baren with 612 ball bearings that do not have cushioning to them. The uncushioned bearings allow the user to press with the power needed to easily print
large areas of color. This bearing is not meant for fine lines. I have not lubricated the bearings with plant-based oils. PB oils can oxidize and gum up the bearings (not good).
I have used many different ball bearing barens and this is by far the most comfortable type I've used. The backing to the baren is padded with a soft rubber. The leather handle is attached by going all the way through the disk. This is a top-of-line baren.
I've included a couple of photos taken from a demo that famous woodblock artist Paul Binnie did some years back and he is using one of these barens.
Barens are great because you never have to change and baren skin and they are much easier on your shoulder. If you go on McClain's these barens are $250 and have a 3-6 month wait.
I am only selling these because I have graduated to much more expensive Japanese Hon barens.
