I am retiring from label collecting after 60 years of enjoyment in the hobby. One of my collections I am now breaking up, is my early salmon label collection.
This amazing label is part of a 5 label "letter to home", written by a soldier fighting on the front lines during World War 1. There was obviously no writing paper available near the war front, so this soldier used 5 salmon labels (probably taken from the mess) to write home to his family. This listing is for label #4, label#5 (in pieces), and the envelope page letter to home. The soldier writes about a skirmish where he "fired 40 rounds and my rifle was so hot, I could not hold it"...
The label design was actually trademarked to Alaska Packers Assn. in 1905. It is a very hard label to find! During World War 1, The U.S. Government worked with many different suppliers, to provide necessary support to the war effort. Alaska Packers Assn. was one of many salmon packers to supply quality protein to the troops.
This is a rare "one-of-a-kind" item that brings personal history with it. Should you decide to frame this label, I suggest using clear glass on both sides of the frame, so guests can read about all of the action this soldier went through.
Note: (2/4/26) - I have decided to also include the remaining label (in pieces, but with writing on the back side) AND THE ENVELOPE with this purchase.
Winning bidder pays $7.50 shipping, as there has been a recent price increase with U.S. mail.
As I believe shipping charges should be cost-neutral as a business practice, I will reimburse any extra shipping charges back to the buyer. I use the very best shipping materials, and will combine auction purchases when I can, to save you more money on shipping.
Thank you for your business ....
