This is an extra-large WayangKulit shadow puppet, representing Batara Kala,one of the most powerful figures of Javanese mythology. The puppet originally belonged to a traditional puppeteer from Central Java and was used in authentic shadow theatre (wayang kulit) performances.

About the character:
Batara Kala appears inthe Mahabharata tradition and in the classical WayangPurwa epics.He is the fearsome son of BataraGuru (Shiva) and Batari Uma, born from amoment of uncontrolled divine desire. In Javanese belief, Batara Kalaembodies darkness, destruction, bad fate and the devouring force oftime. He is also central in ruwatan purification rituals.
