Sapphires and rubies are both part of the corundum family, with the blue color of sapphires coming from iron impurities, while rubies owe their red hue to chromium. As one of the hardest gemstones, second only to diamonds, sapphire has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

Sapphires come in a variety of colors, from blue to yellow, green, and even orange-pink. Colorless sapphires are sometimes used as diamond substitutes. The gemstones are mined from alluvial or weathering deposits in regions like the United States, Australia, China, Thailand, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka.

With excellent toughness, sapphire can withstand a variety of cleaning methods. Clean sapphire stones using warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinsing well after washing. Ultrasonic treatment and steam cleaning are safe for sapphire, but boiling is not recommended.

While tough, sapphire can scratch other gemstones or metals and can be scratched by diamonds. Store sapphires carefully to avoid damage.

Normal sapphire gemstones can be safely fired in a kiln, but star sapphires should not be exposed to extreme heat, as it could cause them to disintegrate.
