Yellow Dog was an underground comix newspaper and later comic book published by the Print Mint in Berkeley, California. It published 22 issues from 1968 to 1973, featuring many of the period's most notable underground cartoonists, including Robert Crumb, Joel Beck, Robert Williams, Rick Griffin, Greg Irons, and Trina Robbins. Other frequent contributors included Andy Martin, Franz Cilensek, John Thompson, Buckwheat Florida, Jr., Jim Osborne, Ronald Lipking, and Hak Vogrin. The founding editor was Print Mint co-publisher Don Schencker.

There is some disagreement about the impetus for Yellow Dog. Print Mint publisher/editor Don Schencker claims he came up with the idea, wanting to create an underground comix version of the old comics section of the Sunday newspaper. Cartoonist John Thompson claims that he and Joel Beck came up with the idea of a comix newspaper with the title "Puck the Yellow Kid" (a reference to Richard F. Outcault's' pioneering comics strip character The Yellow Kid). Thompson states that after some coaxing by the artists, Schencker agreed to publish the newspaper, but changed the name to Yellow Dog.

One of the oldest and longest-running underground titles (bettered only by Weirdo), Yellow Dog started life as an underground newspaper before becoming a regular-sized publication with the combination issue #13-14. Despite some nice Robert Crumb art, the earliest issues were very insubstantial, consisting largely of dope-oriented vignettes and scatological humor. Issues from #7 up were considerably better, although still with a fair proportion of filler material each issue. Highlights included Gilbert Shelton’s Freak Brothers (#7–10), Crumb’s Mr. Natural (#8) and some great art from Robert Williams (#7, 9-10), Kim Deitch (#9-10) and Skip Williamson (#11-12).

The first comic-sized issue was the best of the run, containing substantial strips by Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, and a nice Nard’n’Pat story from Jay Lynch. After this the title increasingly came to be seen as a showcase for new talent, and again, most issues were patchy, although there was still a lot to admire. Greg Irons developed from a psychedelic artist into a cartoonist with some bite, and this is reflected in his fine strips in #13-14 and #17–20. Other notable contributors were Justine Green (#15, 19, 21, 22), Trina Robbins (#19, 20, 23, 25) and Bill Griffiths (#18-20). Young cartoonists Bob Armstrong (#23) and Howard Cruse (#24) also got their breaks in Yellow Dog, though both were to progress to greater things.

OUR STORY - While living in Greenwich Village in the sixties. There was a little store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics.  Every Friday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest version just hitting the shelves. With several of my hippy friends grooving, and laughing over Comics, we’d sit around that smoke-filled room, sometimes late into the night.  Fast forward, some fifty years later – my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in the back of our storage locker.  It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds of underground comics that had only been read once, were in beautiful condition.  It felt like we discovered a pot of gold.  We wrote to dozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory.  They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing for the collection. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless.  Now we offer them on E-Bay and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our more than fair and reasonable prices.  Many we had universally certified with CGC, so you’ll know we’re trustworthy, reliable and have the best of service.  Just check the feedback and reviews to know we’re honest and responsible.  We are happy to answer any questions you may have and hope you buy them now while they still are available.  First come, first serve.  Thank you again for your time and interest.
