In the autumn of 1965 photographer Robert Kincaid arrives in Madison County, lowa, to take pictures of the Roseman covered bridge for National Geographic magazine.

When he stops at a farmhouse to ask directions, he meets Francesca Johnson, a bored and restless house-wife, whose husband and two children are away on a short holiday. And at that moment both their lives are changed forever.
