This unusual plant, whose dense cushion of greenery appeals to the best garden ornamental and deciduous crops, is difficult at first glance to recognize signs of kinship with garden salads. But oil cress, or spilantes, is an edible crop no less than ordinary watercress. However, you should not rush to decorate the beds with it: it looks great in any company and in separate pots, spilantes will bring new accents to the usual collection of summer plants. Its inflorescences look like outlandish curious heads, and the color of the greenery perfectly contrasts with other plants. And it's very easy to grow watercress.
Few annuals with original blooms can compete with Spilanthes in the versatility of their talents. This plant is appreciated for its medicinal properties, inimitable, exotic flowering, and original dense foliage. This plant remains rare and sparsely distributed even today, but it deserves a completely different fate.
Despite the name, which appeals to a modest-sized garden watercress, spilanthes forms lush, spreading, large bushes. In height, this annual reaches 60 cm, and only in unfavorable conditions is limited to a modest 30-40 cm. Creeping thin shoots are crowned with inflorescences and densely dotted with leaves, creating a cushion effect. The leaves of spilanthes are quite wide, ovate, sit on long petioles, are located on the shoots opposite, whole along the edge.
Spilanthes flowers are very similar in shape to an eyeball. The heads are balls with a slight bulge at the top, although they reach a diameter of no more than 3 cm, but against the background of dark foliage they seem very catchy and original. Like curious eyes, they rise on long pedicels, enliven the boring turf and transform the appearance of this summer garden beyond recognition. Spherical inflorescences consist of small grayish-yellow flowers, at the top the small flowers of the "eye" are colored burgundy.
The flowering period of spilanthes is as long as that of most garden annuals. It begins in June and July and continues until the end of the season, when the garden begins to be hampered by the first winter frosts.
Spilanthes leaves can be eaten like any other salad. The plant is endowed with good analgesic and soothing properties.
