Background
Doi Shinryō is well known as a distinguished disciple of Inoue Shinkai. He was the son of Doi Masanori and initially signed his works as “Hirado-jū Masashige.” By order of the Hirado domain in Hizen Province, he traveled to Osaka, where he studied under Shinkai. In the second year of Tenna (1682), he returned to Hirado. He was granted the character “Shin” (真) by Shinkai and changed his smith name from Masashige to Shinryō. Thereafter, he was active as an official swordsmith of the Hirado domain. Very few of his works survive today, making them quite rare. |
