What It Is

This is a handheld surform “shaver” tool from Stanley’s Surform series. Surform tools are like rasps / plane hybrids — good for rapidly removing wood or other stock and shaping material, especially in curved or awkward areas.

Key Features

• Blade Width: 1-5/8 inches. 

• Overall Length: ~7-1/4 inches. 

• Body / Handle: Made from molded polypropylene — lightweight and fairly durable. 

• Blade Design: Curved blade, side-cut / sidecut teeth (meaning the teeth are on the sides too), which helps when shaving into corners and detailed / contoured surfaces.

• Cut / Tooth Type: “Second-cut” design. This is a coarser tooth arrangement, good for faster material removal rather than fine finish. Stroke / Action: It “works on the pull stroke.” That means you pull it toward you to cut, which tends to give better control and shave-like action. 

• Blade Replacement: Click-on replacement blade makes changing worn blades easier.

What It’s Good For / Use Cases

• Rapid stock removal on wood (e.g. shaping, leveling, removing millwork imperfections) where finish is not the top priority.

• Working in corners, curved surfaces, edges thanks to side-cut teeth and curved blade.

• Good for DIY, carpentry, trim work, possibly shaping plaster, soft materials, etc.

• When you need something lighter, compact, easier to handle than full-sized planes or power tools.

Things to Keep in Mind / Limitations

• Because it’s a coarser cut tool, the finish won’t be super smooth — you’ll likely need to follow up with finer tools (sandpaper, plane, file) to get a smooth result. The blade will get dull over time; replacing the blade is part of normal use.

• Not ideal for very precise, delicate finishing work.

• As with any sharp tool, safety: the edges are sharp, you’ll want proper grip, gloves, etc., especially when getting into corners or tight places.
