The Bank of Honduras and the Banco Atlantida replaced peso currency and introduced first lempira banknotes in 1932.
The Lempira was named after the 16th-century cacique Lempira, a ruler of the indigenous Lenca people, who is renowned in Honduran folklore for leading the local native resistance against the Spanish conquistador forces. He is a national hero and is honored on both the 1 lempira note and the 20 and 50 centavos coins.
The National Coat-of-Arms represent the equilateral triangle shape pyramid. On its base a volcano between two towers, above the rainbow and below rising sun with rays. The pyramid is placed over the land by the Atlantic and Pacific seas. In the oval inscription which translate as "Republic of Honduras, Free, Sovereign and Independent. 15th September 1821". Above oval a tied-up quiver full of arrows on both sided horns of plenty, resting over the oak and pine trees. Bellow, the mines, a bar, drill, a wedge, sledgehammer and hammer placed under oval.
The Mesoamerican ballgame was a sport with ritual associations played since at least 1650 BC by the pre-Columbian people of Ancient Mesoamerica.
Lempira was a warrior chieftain of the Lenca's of western Honduras in Central America during the 1530s, he led resistance to Francisco de Montejo's attempts to conquer and incorporate the region into the province of Honduras.
