Scarce Antique 19thC BRASS OR BRONZE PIG (BOAR) - NIB WIPE for Quill Pen c1840 - 1860

Victorian Desk Item.

Victorians loved their novelty desk items, especially involving animals. This delightful 19thC pig (boar) still has its original old bristle, (probably from a boar) making it a delight to display, and a great find for any collector.

In the 19th century it was fashionable to breed pigs to a colossal size, and painters of the day would do livestock portraits of prize pigs at the request of the proud farmer. Such genuine paintings are now highly prized. This pig is unmistakably of similar proportions for that era, along with very short legs.

The pen wipe (or nib wipe) in that era used natural animal bristles, and was a device required on any desk where writing with ink was done, and in those times it would be a dip pen or feather quill pen. This item may have graced the desk of a gentlman farmer or land owner.
