When I first started in magic in the early 1970's, anyone who was serious about doing stage magic wanted to go to the Chavez School of Magic.   It was like the Ivy League of magic education, teaching classical stage magic techniques.   And among those categories of magic that Chavez School excelled in teaching was, of course, Dove Magic.   

Magicians are fickle creatures.  I am not sure exactly when Dove acts started to disappear from the magic scene, but it is a shame, because lay audiences are still impressed by the production of a dove from an empty handkerchief.  When done properly and smoothly, it is one of magic's most amazing effects.   Unlike other classic stage manipulation with cards or billiard balls, which lay people find impressive, but tend to be impressed by the obvious skill required, if a magician does a classic dove production act, lay people are impressed and amazed.  They see it as very magical.

If you have any interest in working with doves, this is a must-have book.  It covers barehanded productions from silks, and also effects with props and apparatus.  And of course proper handling and care of these living creatures.    The book also contains a chapter teaching Slydini's amazing dove production.

Even if you are not going to use doves, there is info that could apply to using other animals in your magic act, and if you are never going to use animals, there is still a lot of fascinating ideas and history in this book.  A section with photos of great dove workers is included.
