Historical Note:
Heinrich Berghaus’ Physikalischer Atlas (begun 1837) was the first great thematic atlas, combining maps with scientific diagrams of geology, climatology, hydrography, and ethnography. This 1837 plate predates the more common 1840s–50s issues, making it an especially desirable early printing.
