This is for an original 1912-1925 Spalding Autograph model John
J. Evers game used bat. The bat is 34 inches long and weighs approximately 33
ounces (32.04 to be exact). Between 1912 and 1925 Evers played for the Chicago Cubs,
Boston Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox and was a three time
World Champion. The bat has a Spalding stamp on the knob which usually means a
store model bat. However PSA letters state “Both the Gold Medal Autograph and
Autograph series, appear in Spalding catalogs of the era and were also
available to the public. Spalding catalogs list the names of players available
on the Autograph bats, one of which is Evers. Johnny Evers Autograph models
were available during the labeling period of 1910 through at least 1922.”. PSA
letters go on to state “a lighter weight suggests a non-catalog model possibly a
special order by another player”. Since the store model bats and actual professional
game used bats are exactly the same, PSA will grade the bat a maximum of GU 6
unless there is detailed and indisputable provenance of player use, of which there
is none. REA Auctions just sold a similar bat that was cracked and had a chip
out of the knob for 1860.00. That bat also had the Spalding logo stamped on the
knob. This bat is simply gorgeous, has no cracks and is pounded with use. The
stamping of SPALDING John J Evers AUTOGRAPH is nice and strong. Tough to find a
better looking bat from a vintage Hall of Famer embedded in baseball lore. From
“Merkle’s Boner” to “Tinker to Evers to Chance”, Johnny Evers will be forever
known to baseball historians and fans alike.
