DC fans and readers of the final few issues of Red Hood (Vol 1, 2021) and its follow-up, last year's six-issue limited series Red Hood: The Hill (2024), were introduced to the Gotham neighborhood known as The Hill, a pre-dominantly lower income area run by gangs with little attention paid to it by the GCPD. While The Hill has been mentioned sporadically in various Batman titles over the last few decades, the Red Hood series' setting of The Hill likely caught many readers off-guard, leaving them to wonder if they missed something.
[ Don't worry if you felt this way. We did, too, So we did something about it -- and we brought it to eBay for everybody else. ] Okay, back to our brief introduction...
Even more than it being a Gotham neighborhood, The Hill is a real DC Comics "Deep Dive."
The Hill is a place created by writer CHRISTOPHER PRIEST for his Batman One-Shot, BATMAN: THE HILL, published way back in the year 2000. The one-shot story takes place before the Batman crossover events of Cataclysm and No Man's Land, given the lack of any widespread devastation to Gotham City, and it's a story where the neighborhood of The Hill is every bit as much of a character as the actual characters themselves. Of the latter, it's the local gang leader DEMETRIUS R. KORLEE who functions as the main antagonist, as his involvement in a murder is what eventually provokes BATMAN to get involved in his affairs.
Moreover, Korlee's story continues in Red Hood: The Hill, as the limited series pits Jason Todd against Korlee's son, DEMETRIUS JUNIOR.
On a larger scale, the story of Batman: The Hill also explores socio-political themes, such as how police forces like the GCPD either over-target or completely avoid / ignore lower income urban areas for one reason or another. This politically sensitive topic even trips up Batman to some extent, as he becomes aware of even his own inadequacies when having to work in The Hill's unfamiliar environment.
