This is for an original on site program for the September 5 1930 Welterweight Championship of the World bout between Champion Young Jack Thompson and challenger Tommy Freeman held at League Park in Cleveland Ohio. Young Jack Thompson just acquired the Championship belt on May 9 with a 15 round decision over Jackie Fields, making him the first black fighter to hold the World Welterweight Championship. He would fight another 6 fights, including a loss, before putting his title on the line for a fight with Tommy Freeman, less than four months from winning the title. The fans got more than their monies worth on this night as the two fighters would slug it out non stop for 15 rounds. To everyone’s amazement, including the fighters, the referee would award the decision to Freeman, even though he suffered the only knock down of the fight in the second round. The ref claimed that Freeman was much more active during the last 3 rounds and would give him the victory based solely on that. Freeman promised Thompson a rematch and just 7 months later would lose the title back to Young Thompson via TKO in the 12th round. An extremely rare and historically significant championship program from the golden age of boxing.
