From the mid-1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn purchased a total of 942 locomotives of the V 60/V 60.1 series for light and medium-sized shunting services. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher friction load of the BR 261. The machines reach a maximum speed of 30 km/h when shunting and 60 km/h when moving on line.
