In order to remedy the lack of powerful shunting locomotives, the Deutsche Bundesbahn purchased the V 60 series locomotives from the mid-1950s. These machines, which can be found in almost Allen German marshalling yards, reached a maximum speed of 30 km/h in shunting and 60 km/h in line. At the beginning of the 1990s, the first considerations were given to remotorizing some machines with a modern engine. From 1997 onwards, only machines that had already been converted to radio remote control were equipped with a Caterpillar engine and redesignated as the 363 series.
