3rd generation Chiyozuru (三代目千代鶴) 77mm Nobukuni (延國) Japanese smoothing hand plane (kanna) by master blacksmith Ochiai Uichi (Chiyozuru Nobukuni, 千代鶴延国) 1896-1978. Kanna dai is Japanese white oak (shirakashi). Blade has blacksmith finish. Includes paulownia storage box. New old stock. Very minor dent in back of blade (see photo) probably from previous owner hammering it into the dai for a possible test cut or insertion. Blade is very sharp. Dai has minor dents on back from pounding with hammer for blade extraction (see photos). Dai is not set up yet to properly receive the blade, so the blade fit is very tight. Condition is incredible but has minor scratches and dirt since it is over 50 years old! This is your chance to own and use an extremely rare, professional grade kanna.
Uichi apprenticed under the legendary master blacksmith Chiyozuru Korehide and was later given his blacksmith trade name, Nobukuni. In 1948 Korehide asked Nobukuni if he would like to be the third Chiyozuru because he recognized that he possessed the potential skills and passion of a great kanna blacksmith.
Nobukuni was known for his ability to make kanna very hard (RC67) but not brittle. He was one of the first to combine traditional blacksmithing with modern technology and scientific analysis to achieve near perfection. His kanna are of the highest quality and not recommended for those unfamiliar with Japanese hand planes.
Nobukuni retired in 1970 after working as a blacksmith for more than 60 years. His kanna are very rare and highly sought after. This used masterpiece is in incredible condition! The blade will require sharpening and the dai will need to be set up before use.
I was fortunate to find this kanna and hope that it finds its way to someone who can appreciate it. Thanks for your interest!
