From 1973 onwards, the DB put over 100 of these electric locomotives into service for heavy freight train services. When developing the 151 series, proven designs from the 110, 140, 150 and 103 series were used. Three removable hoods between the driver's cabs make it easier to install and remove larger pieces of equipment. With a top speed of 120 km/h and an output of 5982 kW, the 151 was one of the DB's most powerful freight locomotives. The model was also regularly used in Austria.
