Joe Namath and Johnny Unitas, two of pro football's storied passers, filled the air with foot balls before a capacity Crowd of 56,626 in Memorial Stadium today, and when the air had cleared, the New York Jets had a 44‐34 victory over the Balti more Colts.

Making his debut in Balti more, Namath, who led the Jets to an upset victory over the Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969, completed 15 of 28 passes for 496 yards and threw six touch down passes, one short of the National Football League rec ord shared by five.

Unitas only threw for two touchdowns, but threw the ball 44 times and his 26 comple tions erased the clubs mark of 25, which he set twice, both times against the Washington Redskins, in 1962 and 1966.

Unitas's passing yardage of 376, combined with Namath's, enabled the two to set a league record of 872 yards in one game.
