The tradition of placing a coin in the New Year pie (Vasilopita) is attached to a myth that comes from times of the Ottoman Empire in Central Asia Minor. There governor orders extra big tax collection from the Christian people who had to give their valuables. In a while governor dies and the new one declares that this extra tax collected was not necessary and let the valuables be given back to the people.Alas, but how ?. There was no record of who gave what. The priest of the community (St.Basil-Santa Claus) gives an idea that every valuable (which were actually golden rings, coins etc.) be placed in small pieces of cakes so that people receiving a cake will not choose whatever they want . So was done. The big surprise and the miracle was that when everyone picked up randomly a cake everyone found his own valuable given at first hand. So this incident created the tradition of placing a single coin in a cake made to the name of St.Basil (Santa Claus) and ceremonially slicing it after midnight of the New-Year. The cake is cut in slices first making a cross and then clockwise naming for whom is each slice. Usual start is for the name of Jesus then S.Basil then continuing from the older of the family to the youngest.If the coin is found in the slice to whose name it is cut that person keeps the coin for good luck for all the coming year.

 Items valued above 15.00$ OR shipments to Africa, Asia, South America countries, Russia and its previous Democracies, Middle East, India, Australia, Turkey & Italy will be mailed only by registered mail (Standard shipping) with tracking. Shipment charges are not negotiable since they are subject to Ebay fees. Postal charges are combination of actual costs adjusted  by ebay fees and handling  fees .Please also note that Hellenic Post ELTA has doubled postal rates starting from 27/July/2023. High valued purchases will be mailed insured wherever available. All custom & other charges are to be paid by the buyer.
