The massive Shay steam locomotives have been delighting people with their revolutionary technology since 1873 - around 2,770 of these robust machines were built by 1945 to deliver maximum traction even on impassable, steep and winding routes. Originally designed to work in remote forest areas and mining where conventional locomotives failed, they easily negotiated even 10% grades and tight curves. The Western Maryland Railway used the 136-ton Shay No. 5, which was later replaced by the NOCH impressive Shay No. 6 was replaced. This NOCH transports tourists through the rugged mountains of West Virginia today.
