Vintage - MATTEL MUSIC BOX CAROUSEL: tin and plastic toy from the 1950s with a colorful carnival decor by Lois Song.
The highest patent number noted (2630655) was issued in 1953.
A carousel can symbolize several things, but most commonly it represents childhood nostalgia, joy, and the cyclical nature of life. It can evoke pleasant memories of innocence and carefree times, as well as remind us of the repeating patterns in life and the passage of time. This pressed tin metal carousel with carnival graphics and rotating horses and riders captures the excitement of seeing a carousel in motion.
The hand crank rotates the horses carrying the cowboys and Indians counterclockwise while simultaneously moving each horse/cowboy up and down as it rotates in a circular motion. There are 2 cowboys and 2 Indians and 4 horses which are detachable. The plastic and fabric flag on the top is a handmade replacement for the original smaller plastic flag. The flag fully rotates. The music box within with carousel is inoperative. Originally, the music in the box was arranged by Ted Ducan. The metal carousel is riveted together so disassembly is difficult but yet not impossible.
Approximate measurements:
Height: 9 in
Diameter: 9.5 in (10 in including hand crank)
A great addition to any vintage and antique toy collection or for a carousel collector.
