This is for an original 1948-1950 Play Ball with the
Yankees booklet which was used as a recruiting tool by scouts and Yankee
personnel to show prospects and their families an introduction to life as a
Yankee. These booklets would be updated occasionally and would still be used as
a recruiting tool into the 1960’s. I believe that this is one of the first, if not
THE first year these booklets would be used by the team. The stats go through
1947 but the book does mention 1948 so I would believe that these were printed
in the spring of 1948. The booklet also shows Buddy Hassett as the Newark Bears
manager and 1950 was his last year in baseball. There is another Play Ball with
the Yankees booklet which was printed in 1951 with different interior content
so I am putting this book in the 1948-1950 range. The books motto seems to be “It Pays to be a
Yankee” as they tend to brag how much more Yankees have earned in World Series monies
over the years, how the Yankees use only the finest doctors and specialists,
stay at the finest hotels etc etc etc. I can guarantee you that they wouldn’t
be using the same hot shot language during the Frank Tepedino years. Anyway,
this book is in great condition and is filled with great content to lure
someone into the Yankee organization back in the day. Extremely rare but
different issues sometimes become available.
