This was an interesting piece to make, and the final product is certainly unusual, in a really good way. I started as usual with a big block of my best spalted maple and began turning it on my lathe. Usually, the entire inside of the bowl gets hollowed out, however on this piece the inside just didn't want to be removed. As I tried to remove more wood a cone was forming (and no, the wood doesn't actually speak to me). I just went with the flow, and now there's this really interesting cone in the middle. When you fill the bowl with anything really, this cone rises from the bed of candy or whatever. The cone also shows off the spectacular spalted patterns.

Your friends are going to ask where you got this piece! Feel free to point them to my eBay store. I won't mind :)

Note: You can restore its luster at any time with a few drops of mineral oil.
