A scarce pair of first printings in Polish, published by the prestigious Panstwowy Instytut Wydawniczy, of the first two novels of the great Polish novelist Wies aw My liwski, (b. 1932), two-time recipient of the Nike Award, the most important literary prize for Polish literature (an achievement he shares only with Olga Tokarczuk), this set comes from the library of Polish-American scholar Thérèse Budniakiewicz, author of Fundamentals of Story Logic: Introduction to Greimassian semiotics, with her arboreal bookplate, dated December 1972, to both front pastedowns.

These two first novels by My liwski both bear trademarks of his writing, particularly a focus on life in the Polish countryside. Nagi sad (Naked Orchard, 1967) follows the quiet, loving relationship between a father and his son, a hero educated in the city who returns to find himself again in the land of his youth. My liwski adapted this novel into the award-winning film Through Nine Bridges, which received the "Golden Prague" (Grand Prix at the Prague Television Festival) in 1972. Pa ac (Palace, 1970) follows a shepherd in rural Polad at the dawn of World War II, who, after witnessing the escape of aristocrats from the approaching war front, explores their manor in their absence, in body, consiousness, and identity.

Moderate wear to dust jackets, with shallow chipping to some edges, small tears to corners and heads of spines, light scattered rubbing and creasing, and some heavier spots of rubbing to photograph of the author on front flaps. Nagi sad bound in printed white wraps, Palac in green, both showing moderate wear with bumping to extremities, light creasing to wraps and spines, and small tear to tail of Palac's spine. Bindings are firm and sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. Good + / good +.
