THREE BOYS AND SPACE

Written by Nan Hayden Agle and Ellen Wilson. Illustrated by Marian Honigman. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York. Copyright 1962; this book is shown to be the third printing based on the code—C-4/63—on the copyright page.

I believe there were 8 Three Boys books in the series. This one was the last published (June, 1962). All but a rare few were bound as library editions and this is one of them.

From Wikipedia:

Nan Hayden Agle (April 13, 1905 – February 14, 2006) was an American author of children's books. Anna Bradford Hayden Agle was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Charles Swett Hayden and Emily Spencer Hayden. She was a granddaughter of the chief editorial writer for the Baltimore Sun, Edward Spencer. She married Harold H. Cecil in 1925 and married John Agle in 1947. She was educated at Goucher College and the Maryland Institute of Art.

Nan was an art teacher at Friends School of Baltimore and at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She and Ellen Wilson co-authored a series of children's books known as the Three Boys series, about the adventures of the fictional triplet boys: Abercrombie, Benjamin and Christopher. The first book of the series, Three Boys and a Lighthouse was completed in 1951. Its success led to more stories about adventures of the triplets, with an adventure in space at the end of the series.

CONDITION:

This hard-cover book is in good+ condition with like dust jacket. It is a former library book with the signs of librariness being the tag on the spine of the dust jacket, a stamp on the front pastedown and copyright page, number stamps on the rear endpapers, and the residue of a removed card pocket (or perhaps the due date) on the rear endpaper. The illustrated cloth hardcover is clean except for some light tape residue at the top and bottom of the front and rear boards (where the mylar dust jacket cover was taped to the book. It shows light wear at the corners and spine ends. There is evidence of the paper being in contact with tape on front and rear pastedown. Some pages have small brown stains, but nothing major. Page 101 has a small tear in the upper corner. The interior is otherwise very good with no names, major marks, other tears, scribbles or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age. The hinges and binding are very good with no loose or missing pages.

The dust jacket is complete, but is rubbed and a bit worn at the edges and corners. There is one small tear which has been taped on the inside at the outer edge of the front flap. This dust jacket will come protected in a new Brodart mylar dust jacket protector.

From the dust jacket description:

The becomes a very real and exciting project in the lives of Abercrombie, Benjamin, and Christopher when they see the seven astronauts on television and learn about the essay contest on space at school.

Soon the the whole town is caught up in the Space Age—even grandma, reluctantly—as the triplets become enthusiastically involved with their “Basic Research,” the Space Club, and a model rocket which they build from an old hot water heater.

Alan Shepard’s flight in the Freedom 7—and the results of the contest—highlight this fresh, amusing, and informative story.
