As of 2018 Birchman was still teaching English at Moorpark College. He has a master’s degree in English and education and taught high school, dabbled in a graduate program in linguistics, became a technical writer and eventually drifted toward computers. He and his family landed in Thousand Oaks, California because his wife, Diane, enrolled in the exotic animal program at Moorpark College. While in California during the 1990s he worked for Hughes Aircraft and wrote his children’s books as a sideline.

His first book, Victorious Paints the Great Balloon, is a story for 7- to 11-year-olds and was inspired by an article on hot-air balloons that Birchman read in Scientific American magazine. The story takes place during the 18th Century and features a boy, Victorious, who goes looking for fame and fortune as an artist and architect, and along the way finds humorous adventures.
