This computer, a 2011 model, has been well cared for in a smoke- and pet-free home, and the white exterior of the desktop remains clean and bright. However, the wireless mouse has "yellowed" with age, which is common for older white plastic consumer electronics. While I have thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the computer's exterior and its accessories, I have chosen not to attempt "de-yellowing" them to avoid any potential damage. While the computer is fully functional, there are two issues resulting from a period when it was left in the care of a friend who, without consulting me, stored it in their garage during a cold winter. These include:
Display Discoloration: The display remains fully operational, but there is slight discoloration in certain areas. I’ve included photos to show the issue. Due to the high cost of replacing the 3D screen (quoted at over $1,000 by Sony), I have chosen not to repair it. I have attempted to show this in the photo of the all-white screenshot; you can see the sort of amorphous blue-greying in the image; that is the discoloration.
Blu-ray Drive Noise: The Blu-ray reader/writer still functions but emits a noticeable noise during high-demand operations, such as ripping or burning discs. Despite the sound, the drive works and has been tested successfully.
The remote control requires a Sony VAIO software installation that I have been unable to locate. There are a few die-hard Sony VAIO enthusiast sites and message boards out there, and some archival software and update sites as well that have old Sony VAIO drivers and such. The remote functioned in the past, and ostensibly still should, but without the software... *shrug*. It is included because it is part of the computer and, what am I going to do with it if I don't include it?
The computer has been wiped, formatted, factory reset, and updated to the most recent compatible Windows OS - Windows 10, with the latest available software. While it functions well, its age means it may not feel as responsive as modern computers, and the built-in WiFi is slower than current standards. I previously used an external USB 3.0 WiFi adapter (The Netgear Nighthawk is what I used) to improve connectivity, which worked well but is not included in this sale. Upgrading the hard drive to an SSD could improve overall performance, but I opted to purchase a new computer instead.
Please also note that much of the internal hardware is no longer supported by manufacturers, and even the newest available updates are a few years old. Sony's support website stopped hosting the official update server that allowed the VAIO Update software to function, which was a key repository of much of the VAIO-specific software that helped this computer shine as a multimedia creation tool. This computer fully runs and functions as computer; it just is not guaranteed to be including all the specific legacy Sony VAIO software bells and whistles from 2011 & beyond.
