History
Carbolic acid was used by Joseph Lister to treat a patient with a broken tibia bone in 1865. Lister soaked cotton towels in undiluted carbolic acid and applied them to the wound, covering it with tin foil. After six weeks of treatment, the boy was able to walk home.
Carbolic acid is a derivative of coal tar. It kills germs on contact.
