In dominating the 1990 test series against India, Graham Gooch established many milestones and broke many records.
Indeed the performances of England's captain enabled his country to record their second test series victory of the
summer.
The first test at Lord's was to become known as 'Gooch's match' as he recorded scores of 333 and 123. Not even the mesmerising talents of the Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin, nor the explosive batting of Kapil Dev, could prevent a famous England victory.
At Old Trafford Gooch made his third consecutive test hundred and shared in a
EA
record opening stand against India with Mike Atherton. With Smith and Lamb both scoring centuries for England, it took a remarkably brilliant innings of 119 not out from 17 year old Sachin Tendulkar to save the match for India.
In the final test at the Oval India amassed a huge 606-9, but Gooch, with scores of 85 and 88, and Gower prevented India from levelling the series.
In the six summer tests of 1990 against New Zealand and India Graham Gooch became the first batsman to score over 1000 runs in an English test summer.
