It's used with the Automatrix rettainerless matrix system, which is ideal  for larger preprations & buccal or lingual extensions:

To use this device, place the Shaft or Tip in the coil and tighten with a few  clock wise clicks.

To open the matrix, turn the tip back and cut off the proturding end of the Auto Lock loop.
