Disston D8 26" 8TPI Crosscut. Circa 1896-1917

I'm really pleased with how this saw turned out, just look at it! It's a handsome great thing isn't it?

Ok, so, where do i start to describe this one? let's start with the plate. When this saw arrived the first thing i noticed was the condition of the plate, Whilst not 100% perfect it is definitely in the top 5% for saws of this age, The only real flaw was some damage to the very end of the plate at the toe end, other than that everything about the plate was fantastic, The patina is perfect, it wears it's 100 years of experience with an elegance that not many saws can, The etch is still visiable and fairly clear, there is no serious corrosion, just lovely story-telling patina. The two things that stood out the most about the plate were the depth of material and the fact that it was completely straight with no signs of any previous smithing. To say this is rare in a 100+ year old saw is an understatement, they almost all wear the signs of a kink that's been smithed out or some hammer marks from straightening, not this one! The only repair i had to make to the plate was to remove 1/4" of material from the toe.

That was the moment i decided this one was getting a full restoration. The toothline was all over the place but with a few rounds of jointing and shaping it came back into a nice even 8tpi pattern, The teeth were hammer set on our foley trip hammer to give a crisp and even set where only the top 1/3 of the tooth is set. I filed it with 15 degrees of rake and 20 degrees of fleam for a smooth and fairly universal crosscut pattern, stoned back the very edges of the teeth ever so slightly to regulate the kerf and improve cut finish.

      The handle, unfortunatley had not faired as well as the plate, while it wasn't in terrible condition it was missing it's upper horn and had a crack across one cheek, whilst repairable, i decided to use a donor handle instead as i had an identical handle from an identical saw from the same era which had a badly damaged plate, the end result favoured the complete handle, Chris has worked his magic and blended in the original shellac finish with several fresh coats and a coat of wax, the result speaks for itsself, it looks proper. Not flashy and new, not beat up, just right. The hardware is original to the plate and in great condition.

In use the saw handles just as it should, the teeth sing in perfect unison as they sever the fibres of the wood, there's very little effort required to make rapid progress through a board and it's action is as smooth as silk, I tested it in 3/4" Larch and 2" Beech, thick boards of dense hardwoods can often feel like hard work after thinner softwood but the saw maintained a steady pace and had the same silky smooth manner in both pieces.

If you're looking for a full size antique crosscut to keep as a forever tool, this has to be one of the best out there. Is it a perfect, collector level saw? no, not quite, but it's pretty darn close. Is it an incredibly good example of why old saws are still a joy to own in todays world? Yes, absolutely.
