Tech Notes

We observe that earlier models have a metal structure; we saw this on a 1996 vehicle. We also observe that later models have a black plastic structure; we saw this on a 1999 vehicle.

BMW shows an early part number of 51218200656. This is probably for the metal part.

BMW shows a superseding part number of 51218245352. This is probably for the black plastic part.

The metal part is heavier but the essential shape and function seem identical to those of the black plastic part, except the black plastic part has one additional pillar. We are guessing that it is a theft-prevention measure. Based on how BMW presents the part numbers, we conclude that the black plastic part will work on all E39 models. The metal part will work on E39 models through 1996 and possibly beyond.
