Following the establishment of the state of Israel after World War II, the Middle East remained unstable. However, following the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel was no longer able to receive arms support from France. Instead, the United States offered to provide support, sending 122 F-4Es to Israel.
The Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973, and in the early stages of the conflict the Israeli military was overwhelmed by the Arab coalition forces. However, the F-4E, named Kurnass (Hebrew for "hammer"), engaged in ground attacks and contributed to the ground forces' counterattack.
During this war, the F-4E is said to have shot down as many as 85 aircraft.
