Matthews played for Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1972 until 1978.
He later played for Geelong.

The autograph was obtained when the footballer visited Mont Albert Primary School in the mid 1970s.

The small piece of paper on which Matthews has signed his name is 5.3 cms wide and 4.1 cms high.
