HISTORICAL NOTE: The Medieval Armenian Silver Tram, minted in Sis Cilician Armenia from 1226 to 1270 AD during the reign of Hetoum I and Queen Zabel, is a silver coin from the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia. The obverse of the coin features Queen Zabel and King Hetoum standing forward, holding a long cross with a star on the lower part of the cross, and an inscription in Armenian script that reads 'BY THE WILL OF GOD'. The reverse of the coin displays a lion walking right with a cross behind him, and an Armenian inscription around that reads 'HETOUM KING OF THE ARMENIANS'. This coin provides evidence of the political arrangement between Hetoum I, Queen Zabel, and the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia, making it a valuable addition to any numismatic collection. Hetoum I, also known as Hetoum the Great, was the king of Armenia who reigned from 1226-1270. His reign saw many victories against the Crusader States and Byzantium, helping him solidify the area as an independent nation. His issue of commemorative coins to benchmark many of his personal victories are even more interesting as well as the variety of denominations and their uses in the Armenian realm.
