CDV – State Government of Mass. – Col. Henry Briggs & Governor’s Staff

This composite image shows the Massachusetts Governor, Alex H. Bullock, with his cabinet members; Wm. Claflin -Lt. Gov., Oliver Warner -Sec of State, Jacob M. Loud -Treasurer, Gen. Henry S. Briggs -Auditor, and Chester I. Reed -Attorney Gen. The Massachusetts State House in center.  Dated 1866.

Henry Shaw Briggs was Captain of company “K” of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry and was one of the earliest volunteer units to reach the Washington Capital after President Abraham Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers to crush the Rebellion. In June of 1861 he was commissioned as Colonel in the 10th Mass Infantry and was later wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks.  Briggs was brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Volunteer General Staff.  He was originally from Pittsfield, Ma.
