JUDAEA, Procurators. Pontius Pilate (26-36AD): Æ Prutah Dated RY 16 (29 CE). IOYΛIA KAICAPOC, three bound grain ears / TIBЄPIOY KAICAPOC Meshorer 331; Hendin 648.

Issued under Pontius Pilate during the reign of emperor Tiberius.  Prutah were small bronze coins circulating in Judea around the lifetime of Jesus Christ.  They are sometimes referred to as widow's mites.  The significance of this coin lies in the fact that it was minted in Jerusalem under the authority of Pontius Pilate around the time he oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.  This version with the three bound grain ears is more scarce than the more commonly encountered variety with a lituus.

The Widow’s Offering

Then he (Jesus) sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it.  Many rich people were throwing in large amounts.  A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny.  He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others.  For they all gave out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had.”
