In the mid-20th century, a young Kansas blacksmith, Whit H. Buck, began researching various steels and their heat treatment methods in order to make farm hoes that would be sharper and last longer. Buck developed a technique to further strengthen the high carbon steel used in horseshoes, making it an excellent blade material, and used it in many farm tools, earning high praise. He later applied the technique to knives, and developed into one of the world's leading sports knife manufacturers. Buck's policy is to make sturdy, practical knives, and the company continues to research and develop tools that have better edges and last longer than those available today.
