In Hawaii, the fish hook, or makau, symbolizes strength, prosperity, and a deep respect for the ocean. During the early Polynesian settlements in Hawaii, fishermen fashioned fish hooks from available materials, meticulously carving them with handmade tools and files. The deity Maui wielded a renowned hook named Mānaiakalani, attempting to unite the islands by hooking them together, hence weaving the makau into the fabric of Hawaiian mythology. Today, the Makau signifies a profound connection to the sea, its inhabitants, and the delicate equilibrium of life on the Islands.
These fish hooks are hand carved from wood and wrapped at the end with cord and have a Honu (Turtle) and the word "Maui" etched in them. Perfect for hanging. Makes a great gift or ornament to show your love of Hawaii. As you can see in on of the photos, each one is different and hand-carved, so measurements and color may vary. Aloha from our Maui Hawaiian paradise. In 2012, in response to many requests, Da Hawaiian Store founder, Kinipela, for years a peripatetic traveler, decided to gift her many mainland friends with access to delicious, famous Maui coffee.
We are proud members of the "Kona Coffee Council" and "The Maui Coffee Association".
