Tax tokens were issued in the Depression era for fractions of a cent when computing tax. Since there were no fractional cents to give change when the sales tax was less than a cent, "change" was paid to the customer in sales tax tokens (worth 0.001 USD). These tokens could be used to pay all or part of any sales tax at the time of another purchase.

Only a few states had tax tokens. This one is from Missouri.
