original 1909 40mm silvered medal of the Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon race. 

Issued for the 4th balloon race the obverse has 2 men in a balloon; one is releasing ballast. The other is looking down and pointing up. The reverse depicts a winged Cherub looking down over an engraved Zurich with 5 balloons over the city.

Bennett was the wealthy owner of the New York Herald sponsored the event.

This event (Gordon Bennett Cup) is the worlds oldest gas balloon race and is considered the premiere event in world ballooning. From its start in 1906 the U.S. has the most wins with 12 with France second at 9.
